Two weeks of AP exams and the countdown till the end of the year

From May 1-12 our school hosted AP exams.  For anyone from the US you know what these are, but for those who are not US teachers or students AP stands for advance placement, and these exams are important for our students.  As such the last two weeks were pretty slow paced for me.  Most of my classes were empty as I am not an AP teacher, rather an honors teacher, and my students did not need to attend class on days they had exams.  At the most I had four students.  Now that these tests are over, my classes are full once more and I have returned to standard teaching duties with my students working on their final project. 

We had staff gatherings for the last two Fridays.  On the 5th the principal hosted a teacher appreciation get-together in her home. The available staff who were willing to brave the downpour met at Baia Burger for dinner on the 12th. 

I had an interview on Wednesday last week (May 10) for a leadership role within the network.  I think it went well but we will see if I get the offer.  If I do I will explain further. 

I hashed the last two weekends but the trails sucked a bit.  On the 6th the hares got detained by the police for laying chalk trails on the precious sidewalk.  So it turned into a live walking trail.  We did end at a batting cage, where we smacked some balls, and that was pretty fun. It rained on the 13th so the trail was yet another live walking trail.  It wasn't bad but I was really hoping for a run in Bao'an.

 At this point it is just a count down till the end of the year. I am excited to travel this summer and have already booked my flights and hotels.  I had the airline fuck with some of my flights but got it resolved after a few days, and I really hope I don't need to endure that bullshit again. 

Faye is applying for a visa to join me on my trip to the US.  I hope she can come but am not sure how likely it is they will approve her application.  She visited me last night but had a busy two weeks since our trip so that was the first time I had seen her since. It was still nice to see her even for just one night. 

This little fella was rescued by the principal.  She was trying to find an owner when I last checked.  I wish I could take him home but I have no time for a dog and travel too much to provide a good home. 

I had not been to Futian for anything but official reasons so visiting on the hash was pretty cool.

I had been to Bao'an before but never got up close to the Ferris wheel. 



We went out for dinner after the hash last Friday and went to Willies Crab Shack.  This statuary was neat so I took a photo.

I will start this post with some fantastic news.  Faye got a tourist visa for the US!.  She applied in early September and had her appointment at the US consulate in Guangzhou on September 19th.  I took a day off to join her for moral support.  She was originally scheduled for an appointment in Hong Kong on Monday the 22nd but thanks to a last minute policy change requiring all applicants to apply in their country of origin, she was forced to cancel her appointment with no refund and reschedule in Guangzhou.  Fortunately, through a combination of our efforts and a bit of luck, it was all worth it and she got the visa.   Here she is on the way to her appointment. Summer 2025 Part 3: Sweden and Netherlands

After my trip to the US and Canada I had two full days of rest at home in Shenzhen.  During which time I prepared for the next trip.   Faye and I flew out of HK on the 12th of July.  There was a brief layover in Bangkok and then we landed in Stockholm Arlanda Airport in the morning of July 13th.  I foolishly exchanged currency forgetting that Sweden has gone mostly cash free as of late.  Then we took the Arlanda Express into T-Centralen and from there we used the metro (t-bana) to get to Fridhemsplan.  From there it was a short walk to the Courtyard Marriot Stockholm Kungsholmen.  We were very early, so we got some coffee.  We were prepared to wait for a while to check in, but when we asked the front desk if we could store our bags until check-in they actually were able to check us in early and even upgrade our room to one with a better view of the park.  So we checked in, then walked to Joe and the Juice for breakfast.  Our flight ...

Halloween in Bangkok, Thanksgiving in Yangshuo, plus everything before, after, and in between.

It has been a busy couple of months since my last post.   While I may have settled into a sustainable flow state at work.  I am still quite busy during the week.  I am maintaining my fitness routine of at least 3 weekly gym days and a weekly swim.  If I skip the swim I add a gym day.   On October 19th, the day after my last post, Faye and I went for a walk and stopped at a bar where I enjoyed petting the owner's dog while we had a refreshing drink.  On October 20th the high school bio teachers got training on some new lab equipment from MiniOne.  The training was focused on gel electrophoresis but we also bought a PCR, micro-pipettes, mini centrifuges, and a bunch of other resources from them.  We took a quick weekend trip to Bangkok over the weekend of Halloween.  We departed from Shenzhen late on Friday the 31st and got back late Sunday November 2nd.  We spent our time there relaxing, shopping, and I introduced Faye to the se...
