April 20th Trip to Bangkok
I had an itch to travel before our next vacation break. I decided it would be fun to visit Bangkok for the holiday weekend. It is my favorite holiday and I could not have found a better way to celebrate.
Our flight was delayed a bit because it was stormy in Hong Kong. We left April 19th late at night and arrived in Don Mueang airport at around 00:40. I had arranged a driver but they were nowhere to be found. After waiting the requisite 20 minutes, and attempting to call the driver and service provider to no avail, we gave up and took a taxi to our hotel.
We stayed in the Urbana Langsuan. My first mission of the evening was to find a store to score some of the delightful green stuff I came there for. I took a taxi to the store and had them wait for me while I got what I needed.
We went to bed pretty late but slept soundly.
We woke up late the next day. It was already afternoon by the time we woke up so we got brunch at the hotel. Even though we didn't swim or sit by the pool we went to check it out. I went to the hotel gym for a little bit. Then I hung out at the hotel while Faye got ready. At Faye's request I arranged a massage with Onsen (Japanese Style Hot Tub) and sauna.
We had some time before our massage to visit a used book store called Dasa Book Cafe. Faye and I bought some books. Faye took much longer to choose her selection than I did so while she was busy I went and got a meal.
After she picked five books and got two Faye had just enough time to enjoy a light snack before our massage.
The Onsen and sauna was super relaxing. The massage was great.
While we were enjoying the tea and pudding provided after our massage I got some unfortunate news. I found out that my good friend and former housemate (when I lived in Sweden) Sam Gungah died. He was in his late mid to late 40s. He had lost his battle with cancer. This moved me to tears to learn of his passing.
Faye did a great job of comforting me and offering space to talk about how I felt about losing my friend.
We finished the night off with a stop at a fruit stand to buy some durian. Since it is not allowed in the hotel Faye had to eat it outside. Then we came back to the room and went to bed a few hours later.
The next morning I woke up early enough to get the included breakfast. I brought some back for Faye. We finished getting ready and then took a taxi to the airport.
It was good getting out of Shenzhen for weekend. It was a like a little mini-vacation before our next break in May.
